Mekitsa/Mekitsi/Bulgarian Fried Dough

Mekitsa is a breakfast fried dough from Bulgaria, often served with powdered sugar, this fried doughs can be enjoyed with jam, honey or else with soft cheese. However this Mekitsa ressembles quite like the popular Hungarian Langos which is also fried and topped with cheese, mayonnaise or ketchup etc. Mekitsa is made usually with flour, eggs, leavening agents like baking soda or yeast with yogurt or milk. Wikipedia says that in some recipes, yeast, bread soda, milk or yogurt might be used. A recipe from Silistra involves yogurt and bread soda, one from a village near Stara Zagora uses yeast and yogurt, and a recipe from Aytos suggests yeast and milk. Since am trying this dish for the first time, i went with yogurt and baking soda. Trust me the end result was a flaky, super soft fried breads which we enjoyed thoroughly with some jam for our Sunday brunch.

Am running this week's blogging marathon with Famous Breakfast from Different place, obviously i will be sharing three different breakfast friendly dishes from different country. Hence am showcasing Bulgarian Mekitsa to go for this week's theme, this fried doughs are almost like our Indian fried doughs aka pooris, however these Mekitsa are simple to make. And this Bulgarian Mekitsa are shaped with wet hands, needless to say these dangerously addictive fried doughs wont have prefectly rolled shapes, but still you can enjoy them either for your breakfast or for your dessert with different toppings.

Mekitsa, Bulgarian Fried Dough

Recipe Source: Here
1+1/2cups All purpose flour
1 Egg
1/2tsp Baking soda
1/2cup Yogurt
Oil for deep frying
1/4tsp Salt
Water (per need)

Take the flour in a large bowl, add the egg, baking soda, yogurt and water (as per need).

Knead everything as a soft and smooth dough. Cover and keep aside for an hour.

Make medium sized balls from the dough. Now oil your hands generously.

With oiled fingers, shape the dough balls as round shaped discs.

Mekitsa, Mekitsi

Heat oil for deep frying, fry the shaped discs in medium flame until they turns golden brown.

Serve hot with your favourite toppings.

These remind me of our bhatura, which also use leavening agent or yogurt and are deep fried. The only difference is how it is served, isn't it?

Wow, kudos to your research Priya. Never heard about these delicious Bulgarian breakfast treats. They look very similar to bhatura, like Usha said. They look yummy with the jam on top.

These look very similar to Bhatura. Many of our recipes are part of different cuisines with slight modifications. Nicely done.

Delicious looking fried bread... its one of the breakfast dishes I've made for April theme.. Though fried, we loved it with some soft cheese and veggies.

This is very similar to the funnel cake that we eat at the fairs here except for the shape. I would love this with a good dusting of sugar on top :)
