Revithosoutzoukakia/Greek Chickpea Patties in Tomato Sauce

My today's post is completely vegan, yes as much as like Indian cuisine, Greek cuisine provides an abundance of Vegan recipes and today's recipe is one among those. Greek cuisine is very well known for their vegetable patties, obviously one of them is this chickpeas patties which is similar to the famous falafel. Chickpeas is very much used in Greek cuisine and this beans is my favourite, obviously i looked for an easy breezy dish to cook with this incredible beans to serve along with rice. And this Revithosoutzoukakia caught my eyes as this dish calls for a lip smacking tomato sauce. Trust me, we thoroughly enjoyed this dish and the sauce served along with rice makes a complete meal. The chickpeas patties is prepared with cooked chickpeas along with fresh tomatoes, yes you heard it rite. Tomato is used in making this patties which is later drenched in a red sauce prepared with tomato paste and olive oil.

Sounds almost like Soutzoukakia, an another popular Greek dish in which fried or baked meat balls topped with garlicky tomato sauce, this dish is called as Revithosoutzoukakia as chickpeas are called Revithi in Greek. Heating tomato paste with olive oil and water gives a thick tomato sauce which makes this dish more special and delicious. Just top the patties with this sauce to turn them bit soft. You may top the patties with sauce while serving which sounds almost like Indian Kofta curries. However this dish is simply delicious and tastes fabulous when served hot. For Patties:
3cups Cooked chickpeas
1 Tomato (medium sized)
2 Garlic cloves (minced)
1/2cup All purpose flour
1/2tsp Baking soda
Salt
Pepper powder
1/2cup Parsley leaves

For Sauce:
2tbsp Tomato paste
1cup Water
3tbsp Olive oil
Salt
1/4tsp Sugar
Pepper powder

Take the cooked chickpeas, tomato, garlic cloves, baking soda, salt, pepper powder, in a food processor and grind until the mixture turns coarse.

Remove this mixture and take it in a bowl, add the flour 1 or 2 tablespoon at a time and knead with your hands until the mixture turns firm to shape the patties.

Roll the mixture into medium sized balls, flatten them and coat them with a flour.

Heat olive oil in a pan , fry the patties on both sides until they turns golden brown, remove and drain the excess of oil with a paper towel.

Heat the tomato paste with olive oil and water in a sauce pan, add the salt, sugar and pepper powder.

Cook until the sauce turns thick.

Spoon the sauce to the chickpeas patties and serve hot.

This is such an interesting dish. So much like our paruppu urundai kulambu but with different flavours. Looks so yum.

Just like you, I was also astonished at the amount of vegetarian dishes as much as there are meat dishes in Greek cuisine! I see to love these patties.. must try them...

Like gayathri mentioned, it reminds of urundai kuzhambu. Such a interesting dish and well made. The patties looks so perfect.
